The only time you lose gold is when you unlock new units and skills and etc. Do not hesitate to build anything because you will have more enemy ships honing in on your base before you know how to destroy them all. The ease of moving your ships around is very nice unlock other tower defense games because these turret ships all you have to do is click and drag them anywhere you want them.
