Basically you will need to explore and talk to all kinds of different NPCs and do quests to gain special abilities like the air jump which will allow you to double jump. So the easiest way to progress in this game is to keep exploring until you reach a place where you cannot go any further until you have a special ability you probably have not found yet. At that point you will probably need to roll back into town and talk to all the people sitting around and do their stuff so you can get what your missing and then go back.
